Free Your Mind

Do you know a Native American?

Native American stereotypes and misconceptions about Native People have been portrayed in popular cultural since the arrival of Columbus on our shores in 1492. From derogatory and offensive mascots like the Washington Redskins to the latest abuse of the name of a Great Apache Warrior as code for Osama Bin Laden. Even in these times of hope and change the hypocrisy of U.S. democracy remains the same.

In 1993 NCS created several Native American stereotype breaking public service announcements as part of MTV's "Free You Mind" campaign to help dispel some of these myths and expose the fabricated history taught in American schools about our people. The campaign won the industry's prestigious Cable Ace Award.

Today, the use of Geronimo as code for Bin Laden is inexcusable. Perhaps it's time to launch a new campaign to break these stereotypes and free your mind one more time.
